11/3/2022 UPDATE: WOW! We met our original goal to unlock the matching dollars from Shaler Township. As there is still a gap to fully fundraise and protect this land, we've raised our goal to $10,000!

11/28 UPDATE: WOWEE! We met our secondary goal of $10,000 in no time. As there is still a gap to fully fundraise and protect this land, we've now raised the goal to $14,000. All additional gifts will continue to support the Reserve/Shaler Land Protection Project without a match from Shaler. We still have a ways to go to ensure this land is permanently protected for generations to come. We hope you'll give today!

12/14 UPDATE: What can we say? You all have been so supportive and helped us crush our goals. Now, as the deadline of December 31, 2022 looms, we have raised the goal for the last time to fill the remaining gap of funds needed to conserve this land forever - our total campaign goal is now $17,000! We hope you'll give today.

We are Shaler Area High School Sustainability Students and we’re working hard to keep our community green! We would love to take a little bit of time out of your day to inform you about the effort to protect 62 acres of former farm land and green space called the Reserve/Shaler Land Protection Project. This land is in our own community and will help support air and water quality as well as wildlife habitat conservation.

This beautiful green space is in the Girty’s Run Watershed in Reserve & Shaler Townships, upslope and upstream from Millvale Borough, and near downtown Pittsburgh. The property is up for sale and Allegheny Land Trust, a land conservation nonprofit helping local people save local land in the Pittsburgh region since 1993, is raising money to purchase the land by the end of December 2022 to permanently protect it from development and maintain it as an eco-friendly and healthy, green space. If everyone does their part and raises awareness, we can make a huge impact on the community!

As Shaler Area High School Sustainability Students, we spend time every day in our class to work towards our goal of raising money for this green space. We are working to help raise money to protect this important green space by spreading the word through native seeds! We have a special mix of seeds which includes over 25 different species of native plants, including several types of milkweeds. For a minimum donation of $15 to protect the green space, you can choose to receive a seed packet to start your own pollinator garden OR have a packet of seeds spread in your name by the students of Shaler Area. This will help pollinators like Monarch butterflies, which have recently been categorized as endangered due to habitat loss and climate change. These butterflies and pollinators will enjoy wild spaces like this land. Please support the efforts of the community and help us protect the Reserve/Shaler Project!

NOTE: During the Shaler Area School District's October Board of School Directors meeting, Shaler Township recognized Ms. Abbey Nilson’s sustainability classes for their hard work and dedication to this project, and announced that they'll be matching this campaign dollar-for-dollar! Thank you, Shaler Township - and thanks to all of those who support this campaign allowing us to double the impact in saving local land.
